Over two years, between 2003 and 2005, we provided the identity for Sunday Stew, a block of programming on MTV’s most watched night, featuring shows such as “Punk’d”, “Wildboyz” and “Viva La Bam”. We did promos, the block identity, as well as dozens of “Art Breaks”, little short films serving as distractions from the programming structure.

For the promos, we did edits of show footage, and came up with a new trick for every season to make that sexy.

In the first season in 2003, we drew and doodled over the footage, adding jokes and meanings. We also disguised some of the surprise guests that would eventually show up on “Punk’d.” We framed the whole thing with jumpcut punk/xerox typography.

In the second season, we used frankensteined animated hands to interact with the footage and the type cards, and invented some sort of neo-grunge type printed on cardboards.

For the third season, we went through the ridiculous process of printing out every frame, treating it physically by adding mustard or using stop motion tricks over it, and scanning it back in. The type was done practically too, by building it out of cardboard and flying it into frame as if it was 3D.

In the fourth season in 2005, we built a weird graph paper dollhouse where the footage is playing on little TV sets and the hosts are hanging out as cutouts. The typography follows the grid aesthetic by using new wave clichees.
